Mumbai Weekend Shoot – Night Shoot at Girgaon Chowpatty

The Mumbai Weekend Shoot decided to have a Night Shoot this weekend at Girgaon Chowpatty. and after initial hick-up the weekend shoot finally announced for Saturday evening. The event was well co-ordinated by Kishore and Deepa. Both turned up on time! 😉

This time I was equipped with a tripod. But to my chagrin I found that you need far different technique and may be different equipments too to shoot at night.

The first thing I found is that you need a heavy tripod. Mine is OK but light weight. And the sea shore was quit windy. I needed slower shutter speed in the low light but camera was shaking even on the tripod in the wind. Should I have put together a makeshift ballast to anchor my tripod better? Hmmm… something more to try in future!

I used my camera this time in mostly shutter priority mode. This means I set the shutter speed and let the camera select the best aperture.
Another experiment I did was on ISO setting. I took some snaps at ISO 800. I think for the night photography you need completely different photography technique. This was really good learning experience for me.

We were expecting the trouble with cops as posted on the flickr forum, but we were not bothered by anyone during the shoot. However, while taking group photos at the end of the shoot we had brush with the Mumbai police! While we are all having good time, cops came and wanted to stop us shooting. Kishore was all angry and worked up, but finally good sense prevailed and cops left us alone. By that time the shoot was over and people started dispersing.

A small group went to take photos from Marine Lines Flyover (Shamaldas Gandhi Road) on Marine Drive. I show some amazing photos taken from there with big blazing head and tail light trails.

About 10 people went for Cafe Ideal and spent some time together over coffee, cold drinks and Bhutjee Pao! Finally I left at around 10:15 PM while others continued there fun at the cafe.

I think it’s about time I go for a photography workshop to learn more about techniques and compositions.

What model of camera do you use? I own a Canon S5 IS Megazoom but low-light performance is horrendous. I am planning on getting a Lumix GF1 Micro Four-Thirds. Will have to wait until I have enough money for that.

    1. Jay,

I am using Nikon D40X which is more or less entry level DSLR. You may have to experiment with camera settings to get best performance.

Hope to see your work and possibly comment on that. 🙂

Try Rohington Mehta… used to teach near Central Camera, and worked at Nikon near by… he is a fantastic teacher! Call me if you want his number..

    1. H! Alison,

So you found me here and apparently you are also hooked on photography? 🙂

Thanks for your suggestion. I took photography course offered by GRS @ Santacruze led by Mr. Barodia. He is also an excellent teacher. I will surely look up Mr. Rohington Mehta and his course to learn new things in photography.

And email me his contact details.

    1. Dear Doctor,

Nice to know that you are in photography.

It so happens that we have met couple of times in your clinic for consulting for my mom. 🙂

Please share more of your photography experience here.
